A/C Compressor Working Principle
To start with, understanding the connection between your A/C compressor and refrigerant is crucial. Freon, a commonly used refrigerant, is a type of fluid that transforms hot air into cold air. This refrigerant and the compressor work closely together. The A/C compressor, propelled by your car's engine, has a main role of compressing the refrigerant to absorb the heated air inside your vehicle's cabin.
The most commonly used type of A/C compressor is the swash plate type, which is driven by a pulley and V-belt that connects to the engine block. When you switch on the A/C system, the electromagnetic clutch sets the belt drive in motion. The swash plate contains six double-ended pistons that oscillate to perform intake and compression. The flow of refrigerant is controlled by reed valves. Additionally, a thin mist of oil circulates and mixes with the refrigerant to provide lubrication to the moving parts.
Next, the A/C compressor takes in gas from the refrigerant through the evaporator, leading to a drop in pressure. This lowered pressure causes the refrigerant to evaporate at a low temperature before being compressed by the A/C compressor. During compression, the refrigerant gas is warmed and pushed into the condenser through pipes. In the condenser, it re-liquefies and releases heat before moving to an area for cooling. The refrigerant then absorbs heat from the passenger compartment and returns to a gas state in the evaporator before being drawn in by the A/C compressor.
